The Power of Your Story: Aligning Your First Book with Your Business Goals

A book is one of the most powerful tools you can create to get your message out into the world in a big way and align it with whatever business goals you have. Lauren Cobello, founder and CEO of Leverage with Media PR, emphasizes the most important thing you can do is begin where it all started — your life or story – to make sure when someone holds up your book, they are also holding up the core message that will drive desired actions forward in both their personal lives business supports your brand’s growth.

Meet Lauren Cobello

Book launch strategist and book coach Lauren Cobello knows all too well the struggles authors face when translating their brand into a book.

“The story is what drives the message,” Lauren explains. “I see a lot of people write the wrong books for their brands—they write a book that doesn’t move the needle with what their business goals are.”

Start with Your Story

Lauren has one piece of advice for those looking to write a book: Write your story. It is the root of your message and will pave the road for what comes out in the book. However, it must be related to your business objectives—what you want for the next step of your business.

Aligning Your Book with Your Goals

One of the common issues Lauren sees from authors is writing books that don’t directly fit their business objectives. “I think you need to write a book that aligns with where you want your business to go next,” she says.

While memoirs are powerful, Lauren says that they should happen only after a “how-to” book. This method helps you establish your cred first and builds a strong foundation before diving into personal stories.

Strategic Book Writing

Writing a book requires strategic planning. If your purpose is to receive speaker bookings or increase bulk sales, then the book must suit those kinds of people. “You have to really strategize where you want to sell it and what the end goal is before you even write a book in the first place,” Lauren advises. Knowing who your audience is and what you want to achieve before writing your business book will be instrumental in creating something that is important to people and can grow a company.
